A Postcard to Myself

I started this project thinking about dimension. How could I create a sense of dimension on something as flat and simple as a postcard?

After playing with a few ideas — a booklet, a cube, a leporello — I decided to create the impression of dimension instead. I made small 3D models by hand, photographed them, cut them out digitally and brought everything together into the final composition.

The postcard became a way of thinking about the strange mixture of excitement and self-doubt I felt when I decided to change direction at 50. I turned the negative thoughts into dark, ominous rain clouds, while the experiences and twists and turns that had brought me to that point became light, colourful balloons.

It was enormous fun to make. I felt like a kid again and completely lost track of time while sticking soggy bits of paper onto my little models.

I loved the playful quality that came from combining something handmade with photography and digital collage. It also made me think about how much further the technique could go — different characters, different materials, perhaps even an entire book made this way.
