The mayfly only lives for 24 hours. I was thinking about the Day in the Life task and thought they have a pretty hectic 24 hours, maybe I should use them as my character! Anyway, I looked up their lives and basically they have a fleeting love affair, males swarm above water, grab a good-looking female & mate in the air. The female then lays her eggs (between 50 and 10,000 depending on the species!) and she lies on the surface of the water for a rest only to be eaten by a fish….
The wings are a block construction which made me remember cobbles. I had a photo of cobbles I took in Copenhagen this summer so printed it out and cut it to the shape of the wings. Then I painted a few sheets of paper with various greens and browns and cut those up to form the body. The legs I cut up some of the Indian ink marks I had made yesterday. I gave her matching boots of course!
