A Postcard to Myself

Design and produce a postcard to write and post online.

This was a short introductory task for university, intended to facilitate self-reflection, and an opportunity to introduce yourself and your illustration to the rest of the group.

In the brief ‘dimension‘ was mentioned which really stuck in my mind. How can I create dimension on a 2D postcard? After a few ideas that I decided were actually outside of the brief (a booklet, a cube, a leporello) I decided I was going to try and create the impression of dimension by making 3D models then photographing them, cut them out digitally and add them to a composition to create the final postcard.

The brief also asked us to explain our journey to this degree course but I also wanted to try and get across some of the self-doubting thoughts of how I felt about starting a degree at 50. I decided to make the negative thoughts into dark, ominous rain clouds and the life journey as light, colourful balloons.

Mindmapping:

It was a fun project. I felt like I was a kid again and time flew by while I stuck soggy bits of paper to my models! I think it would be fun to invent different characters and create a whole book using this technique. I really like the playful effect it achieves and the possibility to add other media to the illustrations.
